You can reach Chania by airplane or by ferry (Souda Bay). Crete has two international airports: (i) the Chania International Airport, "Ioannis Daskalogiannis" and (ii) the Heraklion "Nikos Kazantzakis" International Airport, which is about 125 Km distance from Chania (2 hours by car or 3 hours by bus).

Chania International Airport "Ioannis Daskalogiannis"

Chania International Airport, "Ioannis Daskalogiannis" (IATA: CHQ, ICAO: LGSA) is an international airport located near Souda Bay on the peninsula of Akrotiri, 15 km from the city of Chania. It is named after Ioannis Daskalogiannis, Crete's most famous rebel against Ottoman rule in the 18th century.

The airport of Chania hosts domestic flights to and from Athens and Thessaloniki with Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air. During the high season (April to early November) there are charter flights from across the whole Europe.

On December 2012 the airport has become the 55th HUB in the world (which is the first in Greece) of the low cost airline RYANAIR! Heraklion "Nikos Kazantzakis" International Airport

Heraklion "Nikos Kazantzakis" International Airport (IATA: HER, ICAO: is located about 5 km (3 miles) east of the main city of Heraklion, near the municipality of Nea Alikarnassos. It serves as a hub for Olympic Airways, Sky Express and Aegean Airways. In addition to the three airlines mentioned above, Heraklion Airport also services domestic flights to and from the other Greek islands, such as Santorini, Rhodes, Mykonos and Paros. The airport is also connected to the major airports on Athens, Greece and Thessaloniki.

Arriving passengers can pick up a taxi at the Taxi Station, which can be reached at the Arrival level of the Terminal, available 24 hours a day, all year round. Heraklion Taxis are grey and have a sign on the top of the car with the word "TAXI". The cost from Heraklion Airport to Platanias village comes to €130.

Taking the bus from the Heraklion Airport is the most economical transportation from / to the Platanias village, but you have to change tree different buses:
• The bus stop is a couple of mins walk from the terminal building Heraklion Airport. Local shuttle urban buses (blue) leave from the airport every 10 minutes from early morning (6:15) until late in the evening (22:45) from Monday to Saturday and less frequently on Sundays. City bus number 78 goes to the bus station in Heraklion / Iraklion (map of the station of the City Bus of Heraklion). Journey time to central heraklion is around 20 minutes and costs € 0.75. Local bus stop to Heraklion airport (HER) is located at Leoforos Ikarou nearby the Heraklion Port. You can find the map here.

• Then you have to take the the Supraregional line of the public K.T.E.L. Chania-Rethymnon S.A., which is closer to the bus stop of the Port of Heraklion (approximately 300 m walk). Possibly hiring a taxi is the best option to go from HER bus stop to the port to the bus station K.T.E.L. Chania-Rethymnon S.A. The cost from Heraklion to Chania city Center is € 13.80 and the duration is 2:45 min. Bus tickets can be purchased either at the terminal or in the bus. You can find the timetable here.
• From the same bus station (terminal of KTEL Chania-Rethymnon) you have to take the Supraregional line "Hania - Stalos - Agia Marina - Platanias - Gerani - Maleme - Tavronitis - Kamissiana - Skoutelonas - Kolibari" and the cost of the ticket is € 3.30. You can find the timetable here.
The total cost from Heraklion airport to Platanias village is € 17.85.

Souda Port

The ferry port of Chania is at Souda, at a distance of seven kilometers from the city of Chania. The bay of Suda that serves as the port of Chania, is the biggest and safest bay in the East Mediterranean. Chania has daily sea connection with Piraeus via ferry boats. The overnight/daytime trip with ANEK LINES takes about 9 hours. There is frequent bus connection with the town of Chania and the duration is approx. 15 min.
